I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We had a big day before we left around school. We started our day with eTIF drills and then some classes invited their parents into see what they are doing in class. It was a wonderful day to visit with parents during Mini-society.
In other news, Friday is an early release day. Monday will be Pearl Harbor Day. The Junior High Choir will come by to carol next week on Thursday. Please note the following classrooms for their Christmas programs on December 15:
11:00 - Calton/Robinson/Wright, Henson/Jaynes/O'Quinn
1:00 - Goans/McGinnis/Staats, Admire/Dickerson/Sutherland/Foster
The program will take place at Hillcrest Baptist Church so everyone will be able to be seated comfortably.
Our last day of Band for 2009 will be on December 14. Our last day of school in 2009 will be December 18.
It should be a great month. Enjoy and stop by to say HI!

November activity
It is time for our first United Nations Activity Night. It will take place on Friday the 20th, after school. Parents are asked to pick up their children at 5:30. Notes were sent home giving directions on what door students will go out to find their parents. If you are part of the back door pick up, please make sure you are facing the basketball goals to pick up your children. Then you can drive right out the parking lot on to Kennedy drive, next to Hillcrest Baptist Church.
We will have our quarterly drills on Tuesday the 24th. The e-TIF (earthquake, tornado, intruder and fire) drills will take place in the morning.
School will not be in session on November 25-27. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We will see everyone back on November 30.

The week ahead
October has arrived and it is time to look at some activities that will be taking place.
First it is Homecoming week for LHS. The parade is on Wednesday and the football game on Friday. It is Hillcrest night at the game and students from Hillcrest are asked to help the football team get on the field. So, sixth graders can arrive at 6:30 to be prepared to cheer on our football team as they enter the field. Please do not drop off your child to be picked up after the football game. If you are not able to stay at the stadium with your child, please have them picked up by 7:00, next to the fire truck and ambulance.
Also this week is our second VIPS meeting. It will be Tuesday night at 6:30 pm. If you attended the first meeting, you can pass up this one. It will be the same information. We are still looking for dad's to help with the Watch DOGS (Dad's of Great students) program. If you are available, please come to the meeting.
As a huge Mizzou fan, Thursday is the Mizzou vs. Nebraska game in Columbia. Although it is a big game, please make sure your child is still getting the rest they need to be successful at school on Friday. I would hate for a short fuse at school to cause someone not to be able to attend the Homecoming game at the HS because they got in trouble.
Have a great week and enjoy this exciting time of year!

Watch DOGS
The Hillcrest Watch DOGS (Dad's Of Great Students) is ready to start the planning for their annual Pizza Night. The Pizza Night will be on October 15 at 6:00 pm. Please take the time to join us.
In order to make this event be successful, we need help. We will have an organizing meeting on September 30 at 10:00 am. If you are able to join us, we will certainly be grateful. We need to check on pizza prices around town vs. what the school can offer us, check on coke products, begin gathering door prizes, and make sure we have the registration table workers covered.
Please take some time to join us for this organizing meeting. We will have another one in the evening, but we will decide that day and time on teh 30th.
I hope to see you there!

Welcome Back!
School is off to a great start. It is great to see the students here at Hillcrest. There are so many of them I have not seen since we were together at Maplecrest.
Upcoming activities include the JBAC assembly on Sept. 4th, Picture day is Sept. 22 and our fundraiser is Sept. 26.
The Hillcrest fundraiser is called a Garage Sale. However, it is setup exactly like the Community Garage Sale at the Civic Center. Many people will have crafts and some will be handing out informational brochures. If you are interested in getting involved or would like a booth, contact Amy Smith here at the school #4681.
Have a great day at Hillcrest!!

Fundraiser Announcement
It is time to start bringing in your items for the fundraiser. We need 2 liter bottles of pop for the Pop Toss. Also, each team is putting together a basket for the silent auction. Here are the themes for each team:
Family Night Out - Falls/Staats/Henson
Inside Activities - Dickerson/Goans/Robinson
Outdoors (Camping) - Sutherland/Calton/O'Quinn
Sports - Admire/McGinnis/Wright
We have also had many businesses donate. If your company would like to donate, please contact the school or a VIPS coordinator. All proceeds will go towards playground improvements and building technology. If we are able to add another classroom to the building next year, we will to purchase another SMART board. In addition, the playground covering needs some attention around the swings. These are all items with a large price tag.
We served approximately 175 people last year for the dinner and the gym was packed for the carnival games and Talent Show. Let's make this better than last year!
The classroom that brings in the most items for the carnival games and silent auction will win a pizza party! Start bringing in those items. Silent auction items are 1 point per dollar, so bring a receipt. Each bottle of pop earns 2 points and cakes for the cake walk are 10 points each, no receipt required!
I hope to see you on February 27th at the JH Field House for the Hillcrest Idol and Carnival.

February Highlights
Greetings all,
I hope you are all ready for February! It has much to offer from a day to relax (Presidents Day), a day to party (Mardi Gras) with the United Nations to a day to have pictures, dinner and a talent show. That's right! It's time to organize for the annual Dinner and Talent Show. This year it is "Hillcrest Idol". Last years winners, Erin and Katelyn, will be back for an encore performance. Who will win this year? You can't win if you don't audition. Step one is getting with Mrs. Dixon and setting up your audition.
Also, our Watch D.O.G.S. list is slimming down. I hope we are able to get more dad's to sign up. I know all students really like it when their dad's (or father figures) come visit with them. So, have your dad come by the building or call to sign up!
Final plug, of this post, is for the Hillcrest Idol and Dinner! February 27 is the day (it's also picture day!). Watch for notes. The first went home already.
Have a great February!!!

Welcome Back!
Happy New Year Hillcrest!
We had some beautiful weather over Holiday Break and then as soon as we get back, the bone chilling winds returned. We will go out for recess when the temperature and the wind chill is above 25 degrees. Please make sure you bundle up.
However, we have some new games for indoor recess. BOX HOCKEY! It is a really fun aerobic exercise. There will be 8 students at a time that can play. Once a person wins, a new pair comes out to try their skills. I hope you will all get an opportunity to play Box Hockey. I know when I played my heart was racing, we laughed and had a really good time. Maybe next time I'll challenge you to a game. Would there be anyone interested in a Box Hockey Tournament? We could have a lot of fun.
Finally, we are in need of more Dad's for the Watch D.O.G.S. program. The Dad of the day was a huge success in the fall. If you have been here once, come again. If you haven't had the opportunity, please call and let's get you on the calendar. You will need the background check completed and the VIPS (Volunteers In Public Schools) form filled out. These are easy tasks and then we can get you signed up to be part of our Dad's Of Great Students.
Have a great week, Mr. Elsea
